A Spring Reset: A Two-Night Escape from Auckland

Escape Auckland for a relaxing two-night spring getaway at Woodhouse Mountain Lodge, just an hour from the city near Matakana and Warkworth.

Sometimes the best weekend away is the one that doesn't come with a long list of things you need to do.

With spring arriving and the days beginning to stretch out again, September is a good time to leave Auckland behind for a couple of nights, slow the pace and enjoy being somewhere completely different. And you don't need to travel particularly far to do it.

Just an hour north of central Auckland, Woodhouse Mountain Lodge sits on 100 acres of private land in the Matakana hinterland, surrounded by countryside with views stretching towards the Hauraki Gulf.

Here's what a two-night spring escape could look like.

Friday: Leave Auckland behind

One of the advantages of a getaway this close to Auckland is that you don't need to lose half the weekend getting there.

Head north after work and, before long, city streets have given way to the countryside around Warkworth.

Woodhouse Mountain Lodge

Once you've checked into your private villa at Woodhouse Mountain Lodge, there isn't much else that needs to happen.

The villas are intentionally TV-free, with a gas fire, lounge and study area, bath for two and outdoor seating. So rather than unpacking and immediately heading out again, pour a drink, settle in and let the weekend start.

Saturday: Do as much, or as little, as you like

Wake up without an alarm, have breakfast at the lodge and decide what kind of Saturday you're in the mood for.

If you feel like exploring, Matakana is nearby. On Saturdays, the Matakana Village Farmers' Market runs from 8am to 1pm, with fresh produce, breads, deli treats, sweets, coffee and other local offerings.

You could spend the morning at the market, stay for lunch in Matakana or explore a little more of the surrounding region before returning to the lodge. Or you can decide that the day's biggest commitment will be a spa treatment, a walk around the grounds and somewhere comfortable to sit with a book.

Woodhouse Mountain Lodge has an outdoor pool, sauna, spa treatments, restaurant, cocktail bar and extensive grounds, so staying put is a perfectly legitimate itinerary.

Saturday evening: Stay in

After a day away from your normal routine, there's another benefit to staying somewhere with its own restaurant: you don't have to head out again for dinner.

The Woodhouse Mountain Lodge Restaurant, with its own executive chef, uses ingredients selected from local and regional sources, with dining available within the lodge itself.

Have dinner, enjoy a drink at the cocktail bar and walk back to your villa afterwards. No designated driver. No drive back to Auckland. And no need to squeeze one more attraction into the day.

Sunday: Don't rush home

The second night is what turns a quick overnight stay into a proper break. Instead of waking on Sunday knowing you need to check out and immediately head home, there's time for breakfast and another slow morning.

If you didn't explore Warkworth or Matakana on Saturday, do it on the way home. Or simply enjoy the lodge for a little longer before returning to Auckland.

The point isn't to fill every hour. It's to go home feeling like you've actually been away.

Make it a two-night spring escape

Woodhouse Mountain Lodge currently offers a Stretch Your Stay package with 25% off when staying two or more consecutive nights on selected dates. The package includes two nights in a villa and breakfast for two each morning.

There is also the very popular Woodhouse Weekender offer if your getaway weekend is for a special occasion or celebration. The package includes welcome drinks, two nights in a villa, full breakfast and 3 course dinner both days, pre dinner wine and entry to Sculptureum Gallery and Gardens with lunch and a glass of wine.

For Aucklanders, that's the appeal of Woodhouse: it's close enough that getting there doesn't become part of the effort, but far enough away to feel like you've properly escaped the city.

This spring, leave the city behind, and give yourself two nights in the countryside and don't worry too much about anything else when you arrive at Woodhouse Mountain Lodge.
